Stars queue to join Rangers
Aston Villa's Ulises de la Cruz

Rangers' title success appears to have players queuing up to sign for Alex McLeish's side.

But, while the likes of Don Hutchison and Ulises de la Cruz say they would love a move to Ibrox, speculation suggests that James McFadden is the Glasgow club's prime summer target.

Motherwell have already turned down bids from Preston North End for the Scotland international, while Everton are also said to be upping their efforts to persuade the cash-strapped Scottish Premier League club to part with the talented young forward.

With Motherwell in administration and having finished bottom of the table this season, Rangers are said to be hopeful that a 500,000 down-payment leading to an eventual 1.5m fee will be enough to secure McFadden's transfer.

Meanwhile, De la Cruz claims that he is wanted by McLeish, who signed him for Hibernian before the wing-back's subsequent transfer to Aston Villa for 1.5m.

Rangers' coach wants me in his team

The 29-year-old Ecuador international says that he has also had an offer from Middlesbrough as he awaits a decision from new Villa boss David O'Leary on his future.

De la Cruz had a mixed first season with Villa but struggled to win over the fans who spasmodically booed him during the second half of a disappointing campaign for the club.

Sacked boss Graham Taylor also only occasionally used the 3-5-2 system, which is better suited to De la Cruz's attack-minded game.

De la Cruz said: "I spoke to the coach of Rangers and he told me that he wants to have me in his team.

"But I also have an offer from Middlesbrough, so I will see what I do and what happens in the next few weeks or so.

"I would love to play in a European competition - the Champions League maybe - and Rangers have many chances, so that motivates me."

Hutchison is another whose future is uncertain following West Ham United's relegation and would love to join Rangers even if it meant taking a pay cut.

"It's no secret that I am a Rangers fan and playing in the Champions League would prolong my international career," he told the Daily Record newspaper.

"When I hear the Gers boys in the Scotland squad talking about playing in Europe next season, I don't mind admitting I feel a bit envious."

Hutchison has been frustrated by the lack of first team action he has experienced at Upton Park since returning from a long-term injury.

"At this important stage of my career, money isn't my motivation, but playing regularly certainly is," he said.

"I'm 32 now and need to be playing week-in, week-out."

McLeish has predicted that, despite continuing financial problems, some top names could sign for Rangers during the summer.

Brazilian striker Mario Jardel, a previous target for Rangers, and Danish centre-back Martin Laursen are others who have been linked with Ibrox.
