Zapcats are suited to heavy surf conditions

Zapcat racing comes to Watergate Bay on Saturday for rounds three and four of the UK Championship.

Around 30 teams of racers from across the UK will be competing at the event over the weekend.

Martin Jupp from Zapcat Racing said he was expecting some very competitive racing at the Cornish venue.

Jupp told BBC Spotlight: "The boats excel in heavy surf conditions which is what they were originally designed for in South Africa as surf rescue boats."

He added: "They are a small, light inflatable with a sizeable outboard and have a power-to-weight ratio of 340 brake per tonne.

"Five to six foot surf is perfect and will show the boats in their best light."

Around 30 teams are expected to compete, with Blues Sheets Racing from Chandlers Ford near Southampton the leading team in this year's championship.

A Cornish-based team, Royal Marine State of Mind, are also taking part and will be hoping to rise up the standings from their current ninth position.

Captain Richie Lake is the pilot for the Marine's team and he will be assisted by Graham Mann, a Marine Engineer.
