Diving: Peter Waterfield seals Commonwealth Games place

Peter Waterfield stormed to the 10m platform title at the British Diving Championships to qualify for October's Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

The 2004 Olympic silver medallist, who on Saturday won the synchro title with Max Brick, was favourite after world champion Tom Daley pulled out injured.

Waterfield, 29, scored four perfect 10s on his last dive to clinch the title.

"It will be my third Commonwealths and hopefully I can get another gold," he said after his triumph in Sheffield.

"I had a shaky start to the final. I was trying to make sure I had enough points to qualify," explained the Southampton-based diver, who won Commonwealth gold in Manchester in 2002 and added a silver in Melbourne in 2006.

Waterfield beat Daley in the National Cup in February, and added: "It would have been good if Tom had been here. He would have pushed me on further."

Blake Aldridge, who partnered Daley in the men's 10m synchro at the Beijing Olympics, was 48.9 points further back in second with Brick third.

Leeds diver Rebecca Gallantree, who finished fourth in the 10m synchro at the Fina World Cup, won gold in the women's 3m springboard competition with 294.25.

"I feel good to have won," she said. "But I know I can do better.

"Preparation for this competition has been tricky because we only recently returned from China so I am happy to win."

Grace Reid won silver with promising 13-year-old Alicia Blagg following her 1m springboard victory on Friday with a bronze medal.
