Rainford-Brent hit her second one-day international half century |
England's women lost to India by 35 runs in the first of five one-day internationals in Bangalore. India won the toss and were indebted to Mithali Raj (62) and Priyanka Roy (69 not out), who shared a century stand as the hosts made 199-5 from 50 overs. England lost opener Sarah Taylor early but then Ebony Rainford-Brent smashed 64 from 88 balls, including 10 fours. However, the visitors lost their last six wickets for 19 runs and were bowled out for 161 with five overs to spare. Apart from Rainford-Brent, only captain Charlotte Edwards (20), Lydia Greenway (35) and Caroline Atkins (21) reached double figures, while no fewer than six England players were trapped lbw. | 606: DEBATE |
Seamer and captain Jhulan Goswami (3-16) and slow left-armer Gouher Sultana (3-26) were the pick of the Indian bowlers as England - missing the world's number one batter, Claire Taylor, who is taking a break from cricket - collapsed. Earlier, England opening bowler Katherine Brunt had Anagha Deshpande caught at third slip in the fifth over, but this brought Raj to the crease to anchor the innings. Three wickets - including two run-outs - in the space of 12 balls left India 63-4 in the 20th over, but Raj and Roy saw them post what proved to be a winning total. Afterwards, skipper Edwards said England were very disappointed by the defeat. She told ecb.co.uk: "We didn't really get any partnerships going. We were good in the field, but let ourselves down batting. We're all responsible for that." The teams will return to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for the second one-day international on Sunday.
