Former England captain Ian Botham led the calls for younger players to be given a chance following the defeat in Perth which handed the Ashes to Australia.

But Graveney refused to consider "ripping up the script" as England look to avoid going 4-0 down in Melbourne.

"We've got some young players and they are being developed quicker with the existence of the academy," Graveney told BBC Sport Online.

"But there is no point throwing in young players just for the sake of it. They've got to be good enough players to play.

"Like Nasser Hussain was saying about his own position as captain, it would be crazy for a younger guy to be captain at the present stage.

"Sure, there will be some changes, but we've got to play our best team."

At the age of 39, wicketkeeper Alec Stewart is one senior player who could be sacrificed as England look to build for the future.

But Graveney believes Australia have shown that age should not be the main consideration when picking the side.

"The Australian team we've just played against has two players under 30," he said.

"Everyone in this country keeps going on about the thirtysomethings - well that's the majority of their team.

"It's just a matter of having the best team."

Graveney received abusive phone calls from some disgruntled fans after England's tame defeat inside three days in Perth.

But he has vowed to continue in the job, and insists the entire England set-up must share responsibility for the failures Down Under.

Speaking at the launch of the Professional Cricketers' Association's new magazine, Cricnet, Graveney said: "I share the same disappointment as everybody else.

"Selectors, management, players, we're all in it together. Just because we happened to lose, you don't just walk away from that scenario.

"It's an honour to do this job. But I'm like Nasser. I'm not going to walk off because there's still a lot of work to do."
