Dyson spent 20 months as Sri Lanka coach |
Australian John Dyson has been appointed as West Indies coach, more than two years after ending his time at the helm of the Sri Lanka team. Dyson succeeds David Moore, who was coach on a temporary basis after Bennett King quit in March.
Dyson had been in talks with Bangladesh with a view to replacing Dav Whatmore, whose contract expired recently.
"It's shocking for us. We came very close to appointing him," said a Bangladesh Cricket Board spokesman.
"We even discussed when and on which flight he would come to Dhaka to sign an agreement.
"His move to West Indies is surprising. It is a major setback for us."
Dyson, 53, who played 30 Tests and 29 one-dayers between 1977 and 1984, coached Sri Lanka for almost two years.

In that time, Sri Lanka won five of 16 Tests, drawing six more, and were victorious in 21 of 29 one-day internationals, but his contract was not renewed in April 2005.
He has a daunting task ahead of him as West Indies have just two wins and 10 draws from their last 39 Tests, losing 3-0 to England with Moore in charge earlier this year.
