Lara expresses World Cup optimism
Brian Lara
Psychologically, I don't think this is going to affect us

Brian Lara
Skipper Brian Lara has insisted West Indies will go into next year's World Cup as "a very confident unit" despite losing a one-day series in Pakistan.

Saturday's seven-wicket win in Karachi gave Pakistan a 3-1 winning margin.

"I think the guys did their best and you have to take into consideration that we have been on the road for a pretty long time," said Lara.

"All in all, I'm quietly confident we can move away from here and still have great hope for the World Cup."

The tournament will be hosted in the Caribbean for the first time in March and April and West Indies will meet Pakistan again in the opening match.

It is also likely to be 37-year-old Lara's swansong as far as one-day internationals are concerned, a move which he hopes will extend his Test career.

West Indies were hampered by the loss of key players in Pakistan, with Ramnaresh Sarwan and Dwayne Bravo having to return home, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul missing part of the one-day series because of knee trouble.

But Lara said: "On the whole, we've enjoyed Pakistan. It came on the back of a couple of one-day tournaments so it was always going to be tough and we've just got to go away, get some rest and get ready for the new year."

Prior to Pakistan, they reached the finals of a triangular series in Malaysia and, more importantly, the ICC Champions Trophy in India, before losing to Australia on both occasions.

"The fact that we got there [to the Trophy final] is enough for us to work with.

"We've got some little areas to work on and I'm sure we're going to do that in the next couple of months to ensure we are fully ready for the World Cup."
