Atapattu has been out of action since March |
Mahela Jayawardene will retain the Sri Lanka captaincy despite the return of Marvan Atapattu for the one-day series against South Africa and India. Atapattu, 35, had been out of action since March with chronic back problem which required surgery and had not been expected to return until October.
He missed the tour of England and the Test series against South Africa.
Jayawardene led the side to a 5-0 one-day series whitewash in England and victory in last week's first Test.
Atapattu has scored 8,233 runs in 253 one-day internationals at an average of 37.7, with 11 centuries.
India, led by Rahul Dravid, are due to arrive in Colombo in five days' time for the one-day series, which starts on 14 August.
Each team will play the other twice in the group stage, with the top two teams advancing to the final on 29 August.
