Khan takes the job with the Pakistan team's fortunes at a low ebb

Pakistan have named former batsman Mohsin Khan as Iqbal Qasim's successor as chief selector of the national team.

He accepted the role turned down last week by fellow one-time opener Saeed Anwar, who said he would prefer to help the team as a batting consultant.

Mohsin, 54, who played 48 Tests and 75 one-day internationals between 1978 and 1986, said: "It is a big honour for me.

"But it's also the biggest challenge of my cricket career as the team needs to show more consistency and discipline."

Mohsin replaces former spin bowler Qasim who quit last month after Pakistan were whitewashed in their Test and one-day series in Australia.

He said his first priority would be to pick a strong squad for their title defence at the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean in April.

Mohsin is Pakistan's fourth chief of selectors in the past 12 months.
