Batting superstars Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly have asked to be left out of India's squad for September's Twenty20 World Cup. "I think they wanted to give a chance to youngsters," chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar explained.
Opener Virender Sehwag and spinner Harbhajan Singh, omitted for the tour of England, have been named in a squad of 30, to be reduced to 15 in August.
A decision on the captaincy in Dravid's absence will also be made then.
Tendulkar, who recently became the first batsman to pass 15,000 one-day international runs, played in India's only Twenty20 international to date, scoring 10 against South Africa in Johannesburg last December.
Dravid and Ganguly both missed that match.
The inaugural Twenty20 World Cup takes place in South Africa, beginning on 11 September, and will span 14 days.
