India's new chairman of selectors has assured former captain Sourav Ganguly his international career is not over. The batsman, 34, was removed as skipper last year before being eased out of the Test and one-day squads, and struggled in this week's Challenger Series.
It led some sections of the media to say his chances of a recall were dead.
But Dilip Vengsarkar told BBC Sport: "There are domestic tournaments he can play in and, depending on performance, he could come back in to contention."
Left-hander Ganguly's last appearance for his country was in the third Test against Pakistan in Karachi.
A stint in English county cricket with Northamptonshire proved moderately successful and he missed out on selection for the ICC Champions Trophy.
His attempt to win over the new selection panel failed when he registered scores of only 24 and three in the Challenger Series.
But he has not been written off by Vengsarkar and the Indian cricket board, whose secretary Niranjan Shah told the BBC: "Sourav has to make consistent runs in the domestic season."
