Champions Trophy snub for Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble
Ganguly and Kumble are among India's most successful ODI players
Former captain Sourav Ganguly was again overlooked by India when their 14-man ICC Champions Trophy squad was named.

The 34-year-old batsman has not played for his country since February and his last one-dayer was in September 2005.

Leg-spinner Anil Kumble, 35, and seamer Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, 23, were also omitted from the provisional list.

Sreesanth was the only one of the 15 named for August's ODIs in Sri Lanka to miss out for India, who will host the event from 7 October to 5 November.

He will, however, join the squad for the triangular one-day series against Australia and West Indies in Malaysia.

"Sreesanth definitely figures in our scheme of things but we need to give Rudra Pratap Singh enough chances as he has been looking good recently," chief selector Kiran More said.

"There are a number of other players waiting in the sidelines and we will also try to give them chances in the near future.

Ganguly has been eased out of the international scene since being sacked as skipper last October, after a row with coach Greg Chappell and a slump in form.

We have other series coming up and are looking at his long-term rehabilitation

The left-hander's place in the 30-man preliminary squad appeared to suggest a recall was in the offing despite a moderately successful five-week spell at Northamptonshire.

Kumble, meanwhile, has played little limited-overs cricket since the 2003 World Cup despite taking 329 wickets in 264 ODIs.

More said he needed further rest after recovering from from tendinitis in his right shoulder, which forced him to end his stint last month with another English county side, Surrey.

"According to the report from physio John Gloster, Kumble was likely to be fit for the tournament but we were not sure.

"We have other series coming up and are looking at his long-term rehabilitation."

India begin their Champions Trophy campaign against England in Jaipur on 15 October and are also in the same group as world champions Australia.
