Aussie captain seeks improvement
R Ponting

Ricky Ponting said Australia still had room for improvement despite cantering to an 18-run win in the first VB Series final against Pakistan in Melbourne.

Ponting said: "We were about 20 runs short of what we wanted. It was a bit disappointing to be all out for 237.

"Andrew Symonds and Damien Martyn played well in the middle part of the game to get the momentum going but our new ball bowling was outstanding.

"That was where the game was won. Brett Lee got his lengths right today."

Lee took 3-23 in his 10 overs, but was beaten to the man-of-the-match award by Symonds, who struck 91.

Ponting was thrilled with Lee's impact.

I middled the ball early

He said: "It was quite a slow wicket. We wanted to bang them in and make it pretty difficult for them.

"One thing I hate is seeing Brett Lee driven. If he bowls like he did today I don't care who you are, it's going to be hard to score off him"

Ponting gave Pakistan some credit for their efforts.

He said: "They're making us work. We're still nowhere near our best yet hopefully that will come in Sydney."

Symonds said: "It's nice to get a few runs in the first final - it takes some pressure off the boys for the next game.

"I felt better in my last innings in Perth - I was hitting the ball nicely there and then played a poor shot.

"But today I middled the ball early and things started to go on from there."
