West Indies' hopes of beating Australia for their first VB Series win were dashed by rain in Brisbane despite a knock of 107 from Wavell Hinds.

West Indies posted 263-9 and the home side crashed to 43-5 from 11 overs in reply before the match was abandoned.

Pedro Collins took three of the wickets to fall, including Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds in three deliveries.

Hinds faced 138 balls, hitting eight fours, and shared a fourth wicket stand of 89 with Shiv Chanderpaul (45).

He was finally caught behind in the 48th over off Shane Watson, who finished with figures of 2-52.

Jason Gillespie was Australia's most successful bowler with three wickets, but his nine overs cost him 62 runs.

Collins was far more destructive with the ball, although he only had four overs in which to work.

In the second of those, Hayden edged the left-armer off the back foot to Chris Gayle at first slip.

Six balls later, Ian Bradshaw dismissed Gilchrist in similar fashion, with wicket-keeper Courtney Browne completing the catch.

A thunderstorm took the players off the ground after five overs, but the wicket deluge continued when they returned.

Ponting walked into a full ball that swung in to be trapped lbw, and the out-of-form Symonds edged behind with a push.

Michael Clarke had time to pull Merv Dillon to mid on before the home side were saved by a further cloudburst.

Chris Gayle launched the West Indies innings with a six and three fours in his 26 off 22 balls but was bowled by Gillespie in the sixth over as he attempted another aggressive stroke.

Ramnaresh Sarwan helped Hinds add 55 before he was lbw to Darren Lehmann's left-arm spin for 27.

And Australia were soon celebrating the biggest scalp of them all when Brian Lara, having made only six, was adjudged to have edged Brett Lee to the keeper.

Television microphones detected a noise, but replays showed the ball missing the bat by several inches and the bat failing to make contact with the ground.

Chanderpaul proved the man for the mini-crisis, however, as he rotated the strike adroitly in tandem with Hinds.

The two left-handers took the total to 181 before Michael Kasprowicz removed Chanderpaul with the help of a catch by Ponting.

Marlon Samuels was run out for 13 but Hinds, after taking 88 deliveries for his half century, went from 50 to 100 from only 43 more - his third one-day hundred against Australia.

And Dwayne Bravo answered Lara's call to produce more with the bat by making 27 off 22 balls to help lift the total beyond 250.
