Finn was the big success story of the Tests against Bangladesh |
Steven Finn has been ruled out of England's one-day international series against Australia and Bangladesh to undergo a "strengthening programme". Finn, 21, took 15 wickets in the 2-0 Test series win over Bangladesh. But the Middlesex paceman has been told by England's management he will have to wait for his debut in one-dayers. National selector Geoff Miller said he would undergo the same programme that led to Stuart Broad being rested for the Test matches against Bangladesh. Miller also confirmed Andrew Strauss would remain as one-day captain a day despite suggesting on Sunday the Test skipper was no longer an automatic long-term selection in that role. Strauss has been rested from Middlesex's domestic fixtures ahead of England's opening ODI of the summer, on 19 June against Scotland. Miller said: "We believe the best preparation for Andrew's build-up to the NatWest series does not involve the Friend's Provident T20 fixtures and as such he won't be available for these matches during this period." | 606: DEBATE |
Those comments came a day after Miller had told the BBC's Sportsweek programme: "We will have a conversation with [Strauss]. If we think it's right to go elsewhere [with the captaincy] then we will do that." Following the match at Edinburgh, England take on Australia in five one-dayers before facing Bangladesh in three more. England then switch back to Test match duty for the first of four games against Pakistan from 29 July. The decision to keep Finn out of nine ODIs - he could still play in the September ODI series against Pakistan - will mean the Australians will have no opportunity to have a sight of him before the Ashes in November. Meanwhile, Alastair Cook will receive treatment for an ongoing back problem but is expected to be fit to play for Essex on 13 June.
