Kieswetter has scored 279 runs in five Twenty20 innings for England Lions

Somerset wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter has been called into England's one-day squad for the tour of Bangladesh.

The Johannesburg-born player excelled with England Lions in the United Arab Emirates to earn a spot with the senior side, which flies to Dhaka on Sunday.

Kieswetter, 22, compiled scores of 40 not out, 77no and 50 in the Twenty20 series against Pakistan A.

But a nerveless 81 as the shadow side defeated Andy Flower's first XI in Abu Dhabi also helped his cause.

Kieswetter has long been tipped for full international honours but England chose not to parachute him into the squad for the first Twenty20 international against Pakistan in Dubai, which they won by seven wickets.

However, having scored 279 runs in five Twenty20 innings for the Lions, England have decided to promote him, although it is not at the expense of another player.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith had made a late bid to regain the player's allegiance.

Like his new England team-mate and potential one-day opening partner, Jonathan Trott, Kieswetter represented the country of his birth at the Under-19 World Cup before moving to England.

But having just completed his residence qualification, Kieswetter, who has a South African father and Scottish mother, looks could be poised for full England honours.

"I'm delighted to have been called into the one-day squad and I'm excited about the opportunity to tour Bangladesh with the England team," Kieswetter said.

"I've worked very hard over the course of the winter as part of the England Performance Programme and have been especially pleased with my recent form on the England Lions tour."

England leave Dubai, where they are playing the second of two Twenty20 internationals against Pakistan today, for Dhaka on Sunday.

They will play 50-over warm-up contests against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in Fatullah on Tuesday and Thursday before three one-day internationals against Bangladesh, followed by a two-match Test series.
