England selectors look at Rashid

Rashid is one of the most promising young spinners

Young Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been named in a 26-man England Performance squad for this summer.

Hampshire opener Michael Carberry and Kent spinner James Tredwell are the other uncapped names in the line-up.

Kent skipper Rob Key returns to the selectors' thoughts having last played for his country in a Test in South Africa more than three years ago.

Players named in the squad can be withdrawn from county cricket by England coach Peter Moores.

The EPS also includes senior members of the England team who are on 12-month central contracts.

Carberry and Rashid played for the England Lions in India during the winter, while Tredwell toured New Zealand with the senior one-day squad without playing in any internationals.

Wicket-keeper Matt Prior, who was dropped for the New Zealand trip, is also in the latest list but the presence of Rashid is likely to most excite supporters of the national team.

The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects on the domestic scene.

National selector Geoff Miller, said: "The England Performance Squad is designed to allow Peter Moores to closely monitor the development of international players and better prepare them for the demands of the international game.

"The selectors can name up to 30 players in the EPS, but we have decided to keep four places vacant to give ourselves greater flexibility and we will reserve the right to add further players to the squad if their performances in domestic cricket merit it."

England Performance Squad: Ambrose (Warwicks), Anderson (Lancs), Bell (Warwicks), Bopara (Essex), Broad (Notts), Carberry (Hants), Collingwood (Durham), Cook (Essex), Flintoff (Lancs), Harmison (Durham), Hoggard (Yorks), Key (Kent), Mascarenhas (Hants), Mustard (Durham), Panesar (Northants), Pietersen (Hants), Prior (Sussex), Rashid (Yorks), Shah (Middx), Strauss (Middx), Sidebottom (Notts), Swann (Notts), Tredwell (Kent), Tremlett (Hants), Vaughan (Yorks), Wright (Sussex).
