Vaughan presided over his second 1-0 series defeat in Sri Lanka

"We hope to regroup in January to make sure we go to New Zealand a better team for the experience of playing here.

"Four years ago I brought a team here and we lost 1-0. That was with a very experienced team," he told BBC Sport.

"This is with a lot of young players who should learn from the experience of playing real hard Test cricket."

Vaughan's men, who dropped from second to fifth in the world Test rankings as a result of the 1-0 series defeat in Sri Lanka, return home on Sunday.

They have at least a month off to consider a tour that saw them only able to take 10 wickets in an innings once.

Their batsmen were skittled for 81 on Thursday and only one - Alastair Cook on Sunday - scored a century, while Sri Lankan batsmen reached three figures on four occasions.

England's one-day specialists depart for New Zealand on 28 January for a five-match series but some members of the Test side will not be required until the end of February.

The squads will be announced on 4 January, with Ashes-winning opening batsman Andrew Strauss at least one of those hopeful of a recall.

Vaughan said he would be happy to take an unchanged squad to New Zealand but highlighted wicket-taking as an area for improvement.

"Experience is a big factor but I don't think there's a lack of talent, there's just a bit of a lack of application and that's what was required on this trip," he said.

"We haven't got 20 wickets once and if we're honest we haven't looked like getting 20 wickets.

"We haven't looked like getting double hundreds ourselves and that's what we have to work on.

"We knew we had to get a big score but we didn't, we never looked like we were going to get them out in a cheap enough fashion to put them under pressure."
