Hoggard took six wickets in the first Test against Sri Lanka

Swing bowler Matthew Hoggard will miss the second Test against Sri Lanka which starts in Colombo on Sunday.

He was plagued by a back injury in the first-Test defeat earlier this week and has barely bowled in training.

Skipper Michael Vaughan confirmed his absence while talking about England's selection dilemma.

"The one bowler you would like to play this week is Matthew Hoggard but he's not available so we have to get on with it," Vaughan told BBC Sport.

Steve Harmison or Stuart Broad look likely to replace him on a ground that encourages the fast men early in games.

Harmison, like Hoggard, has had a year plagued by injury difficulties and England will want to ensure he is mentally and physically ready to play a Test.

But Vaughan said: "He looks very, very hungry to play so I think he will be quite close to the XI."

Moores also confirmed England would not be calling for a replacement for Hoggard, who is England's senior bowler, with 246 wickets from 65 Tests, including figures of 4-29 in the first innings in Kandy.

England's problems do not end there, with James Anderson suffering from an ankle problem, although the management do not consider the problem to be very serious.

And Ryan Sidebottom also sat out Friday practice as a precaution as he is suffering with a heavy cold.

Anderson and Sidebottom and took just three wickets between them during some arduous spells in Kandy amid concerns that Sri Lankan conditions do not really suit them.

On the batting front, Kevin Pietersen looks sure to play despite suffering a cracked finger in the first Test.

"KP's injury is a cracked finger and that's obviously not good," said Moores, "but he batted in the nets without pain-killers and he said it felt fine.

"He'll wear some sort of guard on it in the field I would expect, but I'm sure he'll be fine."
