India opener Gautam Gambhir pushed his claims for a place in the Test side with a knock of 67 before retiring, while Rahul Dravid also scored 67.
"The declaration was made to make the game more exciting and interesting," said Gambhir.
"Any game on a tour is important and you need to take your chance when the opportunities arise. So it was good to get some time in the middle which is what I need. It helps to raise confidence.
"Winning the Test match at Trent Bridge has produced a great feeling in the dressing room and there is a terrific spirit and real happiness among the squad."
The third and final Test between India and England is set for the Oval from 9-13 August.
