India completed a seven-wicket win over England at Trent Bridge to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, despite Chris Tremlett taking three wickets.

Starting the final day on 10-0 needing just 73 to win the second Test, India were cruising before Tremlett dismissed Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik.

Tremlett then bowled a snorter at Sachin Tendulkar to have him caught at short leg nine runs from their target.

But four byes finally took the tourists to victory after 94 minutes of play.

England will now have to win at The Oval to avoid losing their first home Test series since the 2001 Ashes.

As soon as Karthik square cut James Anderson to the boundary in the first over from the Radcliffe Road End it was clear there was unlikely to be a serious challenge to India's victory parade.

Jaffer took a boundary off Ryan Sidebottom, Karthik crashed Anderson to the point fence again and India looked well on the way to a 10-wicket victory.

A strangled lbw appeal from Sidebottom against Karthik was correctly declined by Simon Taufel before Tremlett opened his account with an uninspiring wide.

Jaffer took two more boundaries off Sidebottom to move to 22 before skying an attempted hook against Tremlett to gully, where Kevin Pietersen claimed the catch.

Rahul Dravid got going with a sweetly-time on-drive for four but Karthik (22) was not able to join him at the moment of victory.

Tremlett took his fifth wicket of the match when finding some extra bounce to catch the shoulder of the bat, Matt Prior taking a simple catch.

The Hampshire bowler produced some superb bowling at Tendulkar, suggesting he could be a force to be reckoned with at The Oval.

And a sharp catch by Alastair Cook to end the Little Master's innings forced Sourav Ganguly to come out and face some more hostile bowling as England refused to accept defeat.
