Flintoff will boost Lancashire's campaign for honours this season |
England talisman Andrew Flintoff is still hopeful of playing a part in the one-day series with India next month. The 29-year-old will play as a batsman only for Lancashire against Sussex this week, and may be named in the England squad, which is announced on Monday.
"I'm not going to get ahead of myself, it'd be great if I could play against India but there's a big job to do for Lancashire first," he told BBC Sport.
"It's not a fitness test, I want to perform for them as well."
Flintoff, who had his third ankle operation this summer, is undecided when he will resume bowling.
"I'll pick it up over the next week or so but to put a definite date on it is hard," he admitted. "It'll be sooner rather than later.
Having been out of international cricket since the World Cup in April, Flintoff is keen to return to England colours, but is cautious of being involved before he is fully fit.
"It's a dangerous time. For the first few weeks you can't do a great deal and you resign yourself to that fact.
"When you start feeling better and getting closer there's a tendency to rush it a little bit, but we've done it all before."
