Andrew Flintoff scored 25 in his first outing since May as Lancashire beat Sri Lanka A by 35 runs at Liverpool.

The England star, regaining fitness after a third ankle operation, played as a batsman only in the one-day match.

Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson confirmed that Flintoff will now play in the Championship match against Sussex, starting on Tuesday.

Watkinson said: "He will be in the squad. There were no complaints at all and everything seems fine."

England paceman Sajid Mahmood, only two games back from a hernia operation, took 5-16 in the comfortable win.

Flintoff will not bowl in competitive cricket until Lancashire are satisfied his ankle can stand up to the stresses of bowling fast again.

The 29-year-old is eager to get back into action with a view to an England recall for at least part of the one-day international series against India, which starts on 21 August.

And his county may also field him on Twenty20 finals day on 4 August.

Flintoff took 10 balls to get off the mark before cracking four boundaries, the best a back-foot punch off left-arm seamer Gayan Wijekoon, before falling to the same bowler, playing all around a straight delivery.

Mahmood then skittled the top of the Sri Lanka A order for his first five-wicket haul in the limited overs game.

Lancashire's cricket manager Mike Watkinson saw enough to confirm that Flintoff will be available to play against the champions as a batsman only.

"He's going to go and take advantage of this good weather we have got, to go back into the nets," Watkinson said.

"The ball was nipping around a bit early on, and it was difficult to make scoring shots. He survived an early lbw shout that could have spoiled his day.

"He will be happy to have got his 20 odd runs because in the context of the game it wasn't a bad result for him."
