Spinner Giles played in the first two Ashes Tests in Australia

Earlier this month the Warwickshire spinner flew to Colorado for a third operation on his right hip and is set to spend about eight weeks on crutches.

Giles, 34, had been hoping to regain his England place this summer.

"At this stage I can't say how long I will be out of action, but it could be for most of the summer," Giles told the Daily Telegraph.

"The operation was more straightforward than the one I had last summer but I will be on crutches for longer."

Giles, who was not named in England's latest 25-man performance squad, will see a specialist in June to assess his condition.

He did not play for his county last season because of a similar complaint.

He returned to England's team for the first two Ashes Tests but was forced to return home when his wife was diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumour.

He was then overlooked for the World Cup in the West Indies in favour of Monty Panesar, before experiencing further hip discomfort on Warwickshire's pre-season trip to the Caribbean.
