Fletcher 'has backing of players'
Graveney and Fletcher
Graveney says Fletcher is working as hard as ever
England chairman of selectors David Graveney insists coach Duncan Fletcher still has his players' full support despite their woeful form in Australia.

England have won one match since November, fuelling speculation Fletcher will stand down after the World Cup.

"Duncan has the support of everybody close to the team, and the team in particular," Graveney told BBC Sport.

I know that Duncan is hurting the same as everybody else - me, the players, management and every England fan.

After suffering a 5-0 whitewash in the Ashes Test series, England sank to new depths with one-day defeats to Australia and New Zealand this week.

I've been able to witness how our players are preparing -they're doing it no differently that they did in 2005

David Graveney

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme, Graveney admitted newspaper descriptions of England's recent form as "pitiful, pathetic, embarrassing" were apt.

But he denied accusations of a lack of effort by the touring team, whose performances are a stark contrast to their victorious Ashes campaign less than two years ago.

"The two performances in Adelaide were way off the standard you would expect from our national team," said Graveney.

"It's important for those who have been selected to look themselves in the mirror and say, 'Have I given everything I possible can for this team?'

"That's all we can ask at this stage.

"I've been able to witness at first hand how our players are preparing. They're doing it no differently that they did in 2005."

England now look unlikely to mount a challenge for the World Cup, which starts in the Caribbean in March.

But Graveney responded coolly to a suggestion England should have separate Test and one-day coaches, although he did voice the possibility of having a specialist assistant coach.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has launched a major review, with one-day as well as Test cricket under the microscope.

"I'm sure the review group will be looking at all aspects of the game but our one-day form for me is something that has to be addressed," Graveney added.
