Day three hero Matthew Hoggard is just one of the England pace bowlers frustrated on the fourth morning Adam Gilchrist unleashes some of his trademark big shots after a diffcult first hour Youngster Michael Clarke settles more easily on his way to his sixth Test half century Short leg fielder Alastair Cook needs medical attention after being felled by a pull from Gilchrist Team-mates and fans congratulate Ashley Giles after he has Gilchrist caught in the deep by Ian Bell for 64 Shane Warne is the new batsman and he helps Clarke move Australia along to 417-6 at lunch Steve Harmison, James Anderson and Giles fail to make any inroads after the interval as Clarke brings up his century But Hoggard makes the breakthrough, trapping Warne lbw for his fifth wicket, to end a 118-run seventh-wicket partnership The Yorkshireman then removes Clarke for 124 with Giles holding the catch at short mid-wicket - Australia are 505-8 It is Hoggard's 229th Test wicket and moves him above Darren Gough into eighth on England's all-time list Hoggy is on fire - Clark is the next to depart, although he hastens his own downfall somewhat with an agricultural swipe An obdurate Glenn McGrath blocks for 20 minutes and scores one before feathering an Anderson delivery to Geraint Jones But it is Hoggard who takes the plaudits after finishing with 7-109 as England take a 38-run lead into the second innings Australia take the field with all results still possible, but they need the old guard of Warne and McGrath to fire And Warne is soon into the attack - Andrew Strauss thrusts his pad at one, but umpire Steve Bucknor rejects the appeal However, it is new boy Clark who takes the first wicket in his first over, Alastair Cook snicking one to Gilchrist New batsman Bell is squared up by the first ball he faces off Warne, but survives to reach the close on 18 not out And Strauss is unbeaten on 31 as England end the fourth day's play in Adelaide on 59-1 - a lead of 97
