Paul Collingwood begins the second day in Adelaide needing just two more for his first Ashes Test century He takes just two further deliveries to reach three figures, and receives a standing ovation from the Adelaide crowd Australia's fielders are aggrieved when umpire Bucknor turns down a caught-behind appeal against Kevin Pietersen early on Pietersen shows his attacking intent with three boundaries from Glenn McGrath's first over of the day Pietersen reaches his sixth Test century off 149 balls but is then forced into his shell Shane Warne's negative tactic of bowling round the wicket cuts off Pietersen's flow of runs with lunch approaching But Pietersen and Collingwood remain patient and see England through to the break in a healthy position The Warne and Pietersen show continues after lunch with the latter happily kicking away anything pitched outside leg stump Collingwood continues to accumulate runs though and reaches 150 not out by lifting Warne over the top And an hour later, the Durham all-rounder becomes the first Englishman to score a double century at Adelaide It is the first double ton by an Englishman in Australia since Wally Hammond achieved the feat in 1936 Collingwood adds another six runs before Stuart Clark tempts him into a tired waft and Adam Gilchrist takes the catch It ends a record fourth-wicket partnership of 310 as England go off for tea to a standing ovation at 468-4 Andrew Flintoff is the new batsman but all eyes are on Pietersen who moves to 150 not out with a leg-side single His joy is short-lived though as he attempts a suicidal quick run to Ricky Ponting who scores a direct hit Somewhat bizarrely, Pietersen has now been dismissed for 158 on three occassions in Test matches New batsman Geraint Jones does not stay around long, tamely slicing a Warne delivery to Damien Martyn for one Flintoff and Ashley Giles add another 60 runs before the skipper calls time on the innings and England declare on 551-6 The declaration leaves Australia's openers with a tricky 10 overs to negotiate before the close of play Flintoff opens the bowling and strikes early - Justin Langer fends to Pietersen at slip as Australia reach 28-1 at stumps
