Jones has managed just one half-century from his last nine Tests |
Geraint Jones is set to return for Kent against Hampshire this week, looking to rediscover his batting form. Keeper Jones was dropped from the Test side for Chris Read after failing to pass 20 in his last five Tests.
"We just felt he needed a break, which will serve him well in the short and the long term," England chief selector David Graveney told BBC Five Live.
"The media pressure goes with the job, whether it be mine or Geraint's or anybody else with the national team.
Jones suffered a hairline fracture on his right ring finger during the second Test victory over Pakistan.
But he will have a pain-killing injection to allow him to play on, and batted in the nets with Kent on Monday.
England's management made a point of saying the injury was not an issue in selection.
Jones said: "It's a blow to lose my place, but the selectors have explained the reasons why and I will be working extremely hard to win it back.
"I have been very pleased with my wicket-keeping this summer but I am also conscious of the fact that I am in the side as a batsman as well as a keeper.
"Your performances in Test matches are always going to come under intense scrutiny and what I need to do now is recapture my best form away from the international arena."
Read will take the gloves for England on Friday against Pakistan at Headingley, where Jones scored his lone Test century two years ago.
He has two Tests to demonstrate that his batting has improved since his last Test appearances, when he averaged just 15 with the bat.
Both men are expected to be part of England's squad to tour Australia in the winter, although Graveney refused to confirm this.
"Guys have been mentioned: Matt Prior, James Foster, Stephen Davies - the Under-19 keeper," he added.
"Jonathan Batty of Surrey, who never gets a mention, has been a very good performer."
