Trescothick last captained England against Pakistan

Trescothick was Vaughan's deputy but has not been considered to lead the side since he returned home from India in February for personal reasons.

Andrew Flintoff and Andrew Strauss have since been handed the captaincy.

Trescothick said: "I've done it in the past - and if they offer it to me again then I'll think about it."

Vaughan is meeting with a specialist on Thursday to determine whether he needs a fourth operation on his troublesome knee.

He is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the summer and possibly the Ashes.

But Trescothick believes his time to lead England again may have come and gone.

"At the start of this summer I wouldn't have taken on the job because I wanted to get back into the team and re-establish myself after having a break at home," said Trescothick.

"Freddie's taken over and done a decent job. Now he's not around, Strauss is doing it - so maybe the team has moved on and the next generation is being formed."
