ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL, LORD'S:
Sri Lanka 257-9 bt England 237-9 by 20 runsUpul Tharanga hit an impressive 120 to lead Sri Lanka to a 20-run win in the opening one-day game against England.
The tourists totalled 257-9 at Lord's after being put in by Andrew Strauss, helped by 42 extras gifted by England.
And they seized control of the game by reducing England to 66-4 in reply, with danger man Kevin Pietersen (10) among those to go cheaply.
Marcus Trescothick and Jamie Dalrymple each made 67 but England ran out of overs with their score on 237-9.
OVER-BY-OVER UPDATES
SRI LANKA WIN BY 20 RUNS
50th over: Alas, they can only manage nine and Sri Lanka complete a comfortable victory to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. England, who have lost 11 of their last 15 one-dayers, will have to improve considerably at The Oval on Tuesday. 237-9
50th over: England's task is fairly straightforward - 29 off the final over. Five sixes will do the trick.
49th over: Plunkett hammers Fernando over deep mid-wicket for four and gets two from an overthrow after another attempted heave is miscued out on the off-side. 228-9
48th over: WICKET 220-9 Mahmood 8
Mahmood plays a shot you see on village and school playing fields - backing away from the stumps and making no contact. It was an embarrassing end to his innings and coach Duncan Fletcher's face told its own story.
48th over: Everyone is going through the motions now with the result not in doubt.
47th over: Plunkett calls Mahmood through for the second and they just make it when it looked to be a suicidal decision. 217-8
47th over: WICKET ENGLAND 214-8 Dalrymple 67
Dalrymple has no option but to go for some big shots but misses and Muralitharan disturbs the stumps. An encouraging display from the Middlesex man, nonetheless.
46th over: Malinga starts with a near-perfect yorker which just whizzes past the stumps. Mahmood was nowhere near that! He connects with the next but a good stop on the extra-cover boundary from Jayasuriya limits him to two. 211-7
46th over: WICKET ENGLAND 208-7 Bresnan 16
Bresnan tries to force away a low full-toss from Malinga but misses and the ball crashes into the stumps. You can't blame the batsman there, time was running out and the damage had been done earlier.
45th over: Muralitharan is more difficult to get away and only four come off the over. England need an unlikey 52 off the last five. 206-6
44th over: A Jayasuriya full-toss is swung away over cover for four by Bresnan to complete another good over for the hosts - nine coming off it. 202-6
43rd over: Paceman Fernando is brought back and Dalrymple drives a no-ball handsomely through extra-cover to move to 60. His performance has been one of the few bright spots for England today. 193-6
42nd over: Only three runs are gathered off that Jayasuriya over and the game looks up for England unless something sensational happens from here on in. 184-6
41st over: Muralitharan thinks he has Bresnan caught behind but umpire Llong shakes his head and the batsman suggests there was nothing doing there either. 181-6.
40th over: Dalrymple drives to long-on to bring up his first fifty for England on his home ground. It's been an admirable knock in the circumstances. 176-6
40th over: ENGLAND 172-6 Jones 19
Jones goes for a big hit off Jayasuriya and succeeds only in finding Kapugedera on the deep mid-wicket boundary.
39th over: Dalrymple plays a clever reverse sweep off Muralitharan which is helped over the boundary rope when Kapugedera slips. Nine come off the over and that's roughly what England will have to maintain over the remaining overs. 170-5
38th over: Dalrymple and Jones cannot force the pace much above a run a ball - something will have to give soon. 161-5
37th over: Jones escapes when he lofts Jayasuriya down to long-on and Arnold fails to take the catch cleanly. 154-5
36th over: Jones scampers through for two after some hesistant fielding and the 150 comes up but there is still no sign of the big-hitting needed in this situation. 150-5
"Sri Lanka are strangling England's run-scoring opportunities. Dalrymple or Jones will have to look to score boundaries in the next few overs or it will become unmanageable."
TMS analyst Gus Fraser
35th over: There is almost silence at Lord's with a Test match-style feel to proceedings. The required rate is now well over seven an over. 146-5.
34th over: Sri Lanka have fielded wonderfully today, no-one better than skipper Jayawardene, who flings himself across to his left to prevent runs. 143-5
33rd over: Jayasuriya maintains the pressure and at the moment this could be slow torture for England fans or a mercifully quick finish. 141-5
32nd over: WICKET 138-5 Trescothick 67
A hammer blow for England as Trescothick misses with a sweep off Dilshan and is bowled round his legs. The optimism which was starting to spread among the crowd appears crushed.
31st over: Jayawardene brings back Fernando, who was impressive in his first spell. The luck is running with the batsmen at the moment and Dalrymple's attempted nudge down to third man goes finer than he intended and it runs away for four. 137-4
30th over: Trescothick launches Jayasuriya into the Mound Stand with a lusty blow and it looks like he has made his mind up to step on the gas. 130-4
29th over: Dalrymple is bamboozled by a doosra from Muralitharan and is relieved when the ball only flicks off the pad for a leg-bye. He is finding it difficult to read the off-spinner and is playing him off the pitch but, as we saw there, there are huge risks associated with that policy. 121-4
28th over: An accomplished shot from Dalrymple, a back-foot drive off Jayasuriya brings up the fifty partnership, with nine coming off the over. 117-4
"We are close to being the worst one-day side in the world with inane selection, incompetent tactics, lousy leadership and inept out-cricket. To concede over 40 extras today was culpable and the batting has been hopeless. What strategy is in place for the 2007 World Cup? I don't know and nor do they."
Long Stop on the TMS Message Board
27th over: Muralitharan launches a prolonged appeal for lbw after Dalrymple misses with a sweep but the Middlesex youngster survives. That is about all England appear to be doing at the moment. 108-4
26th over: Trescothick has a lifeline when Sangakkara misses a stumping opportunity off Jayasuriya with the batsman stranded. 107-4
25th over: Trescothick brings up his half century in style, flicking Muralitharan over mid-wicket for four to take his side past 100. 105-4
24th over: Dalrymple shows he is quite quick between the wicket and a sensible batsman in these situations, collecting twos off Dilshan to keep the scoreboard ticking over. 97-4
23rd over: With Trescothick still there England have an outside chance and he shows good footwork to pick up two off Murali as six come in that over. 91-4
22nd over: Part-time off-break bowler Dilshan comes on with Jayawardene aware how difficult England are finding it to get the ball away. 85-4
21st over: Muralitharan keeps Trescothick tied down and you have to wonder how England are going to get back into this game. There isn't a huge amount of batting to come after this. 82-4
20th over: The wily Vaas turns the screw further with another good over. 81-4
19th over: Just when things couldn't get worse for England, Sri Lanka bring on their master off-spinner Muralitharan. Trescothick tries to get after him straight away, chipping across the line for two, but only four runs come off the over and the asking rate is climbing. 78-4
18th over: Dalrymple has a scare when he chops at Vaas and the ball loops over short-third man. 74-4
17th over: WICKET ENGLAND 66-4 Collingwood 0
Collingwood is beaten for pace and this time umpire Llong's finger goes up when he is hit on the back pad. A nice little situation for rookie Dalrymple to walk into! He starts assuredly, flicking the ball down to fine-leg for a four. 70-4
17th over: A good slower ball from Fernando has Trescothick in trouble with an lbw appeal but it's missing leg-stump. Pietersen's dismissal has left the home crowd deflated.
16th over: WICKET ENGLAND 65-3 Pietersen 10
One of the best catches you will see in a long, long while spells the end for Pietersen. The ball from Malinga was flipped at quite a rate high over mid-wicket but Jayawardene somehow plucked it out of the air and the Sri Lankans are delirious.
15th over: Sure enough, he tries one of his hockey-style swishes but it earns him only one run. Trescothick then heaves the ball over extra-cover for four. 65-2
14th over: Pietersen is content at the moment just to nudge the ball around but it cannot be long before he launches into some big hitting. 60-2
13th over: Pietersen attempts to crash the ball through his favoured cover region but fails to connect cleanly, although he picks up three. He is then comprehensively beaten by a beautiful delivery from the lively Fernando. 57-2
"This is the big partnership for England - their two most destructive players must bat for a long time and put on 100 runs for them to get into a position to win."
TMS summariser Gus Fraser
12th over: The rate is climbing again with the loss of those wickets. 53-2
11th over: Pietersen starts nervously but neatly flicks a slower ball down to the fine-leg boundary, before a no-ball brings up the fifty. 50-2
11th over: WICKET ENGLAND 44-2 Bell 7
Bell gives his wicket away by playing on to a nothing delivery from Fernando, who somehow has two wickets to his name. There is a huge roar as Pietersen makes his way to the crease and, once again, his team needs something special from him.
"It looks a very good wicket and Strauss has got right his prediction that the wicket would get better as the day went on."
TMS analyst Mike Gatting
10th over: Classic Trescothick - no foot movement as the ball is cracked on the up to the point boundary. 44-1
9th over: Trescothick has another escape when Bell sends him back and Kapugedera fails to hit the stumps. Fernando makes no attempt to stop the ball and four overthrows are added to England's total. Bell then almost turns the ball to Kapugedera at square-leg. 38-1
9th over: WICKET 31-1 Strauss 12
A soft dismissal for Strauss, who attempts to pull Fernando's first ball and bottom-edges it to Sangakkara.
8th over: Trescothick attempts several expansive shots in Malinga's next over but fails to make meaningful contact. 31-0
7th over: Finally a show of attacking intent as Trescothick flicks Vaas through mid-wicket for a welcome boundary. A shocking mis-field from Kapugedera at extra-cover gifts him four more and he then belts the ball over mid-off as 15 come off the over. 30-0
6th over: Trescothick is almost caught and bowled by Malinga, who deceives the left-hander with a slower ball. Malinga took his eyes off the ball at the crucial moment otherwise that chance would surely have been snaffled. A maiden. 15-0
5th over: An excellent over from Vaas concedes just the one run. 15-0
"You need to make a solid start when chasing a target of this size. Heads have to be kept down."
TMS analyst Mike Gatting
4th over: The Sri Lankan fielding already looks sharper than England's and the hosts have made a quiet start to their chase. 14-0
3rd over: Strauss drives Vaas confidently through the covers and runs hard to collect three runs. A better-timed shot off the back foot goes straight to the man at cover. 12-0
2nd over: Malinga gets one delivery, sent down just back of a length, to rear alarmingly at Trescothick and the 'keeper Sangakkara can only just get his gloves to the ball high above his head. 9-0
1st over: Trescothick guides Vaas wide of the solitary slip for four and then pushes cleverly with a checked drive through the covers for two more. Vaas is getting a little bit of movement away from the left-handers. 7-0
INNINGS BREAK
50th over: Another shambles and another missed opportunity as Murali fails to hit the ball, Jones misses with his throw and, the worst of the lot, Bresnan fails to hit the target from a couple of yards out with three stumps to aim at. The next ball, a no-ball should also have resulted in a run out but Bresnan again makes a hash of it. A ridiculous finale ends with a total of 257-9 - 42 of which came in extras.
50th over: Bresnan is given the responsibility of bowling the final over and almost has another wicket when Strauss dives to his left but fails to get to the ball after Ferdnando tries to heave him away through the off-side. Fernando is then just in after some chaotic running and sloppy fielding from England.
49th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 248-9 Tharanga 120
Tharanga perishes trying to pull a short one from Mahmood and Strauss waits until it comes down from high above to take the catch.
49th over: Fernando gets a thick edge to pick up four down at the third-man boundary off Mahmood. The bowler could have had his revenge next ball but missed the stumps with Fernando well short going for a quick single.
48th over: Tharanga flat-bats Bresnan over Harmison at mid-on for four. Even the tall Durham man could not get his fingers to that but it was a good over overall from Bresnan. 241-8
48th over: WICKET 236-8 Malinga 3
Bresnan claims his first international wicket by bowling Malinga, who backs away to create room but makes no contact.
47th over: Mahmood keeps the scoring down to five, which is excellent "at-the-death" bowling. 235-7
46th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 227-7 Vaas 10
Harmison digs one in short and Vaas skies his pull to Strauss at mid-wicket. With the tail-enders to come, England will fancy their chances of keeping this under 250. Harmison finishes with 3-52 from his 10 overs. 230-7
45th over: Extras move up to 34 after a wide from Plunkett - comfortably making it the second best score after Tharanga's 109. 225-6
44th over: Harmison continues the good work and England have really pulled this back from the dire straits they were in at the halfway point. 220-6
43rd over: Collingwood gets pats on his back from his team-mates and a hearty ovation from the crowd after finishing his quota of 10 overs with superb figures of 2-29. 218-6
42nd over: Bresnan keeps it tight and you get the feeling this is the lull before the final storm. However, England probably feel another wicket here and they could polish off the rest. 215-6
"It's been an excellent spell from Collingwood to get England back in the game, taking the pace off the ball to bowl little cutters."
TMS analyst Gus Fraser
41st over: Tharanga drives Collingwood uppishly towards Strauss at cover and is fortunate when the ball lands just short. 211-6
40th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 207-6 Kapugedera 1 Sri Lanka are letting this one slip as Kapugedera pulls Plunkett to deep backward square-leg and Pietersen takes an excellent running catch. From looking in complete control, the tourists are in danger of being bowled out inside their 50 overs.
39th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 204-5 Arnold 8
Arnold tries to chop Collingwood away and gloves behind to give the all-rounder his second wicket and set up the possibilty of Sri Lanka falling short of what they looked like getting at one stage.
39th over: Tharanga raises his bat to his balcony and takes his helmet off after playing Collingwood down to third man to complete his third one-day century. He slowed down a bit in the 90s and was lucky not to be stumped earlier but that's a fine effort.
38th over: Tharanga is fortunate when he gets an inside edge off Plunkett and the ball runs away for four to take Sri Lanka past 200. He was tucked up by a good piece of bowling but keeps the strike with a single to move to 99. 203-4
37th over: Collingwood continues to apply the brakes and has excellent figures of 1-21 off seven overs. 197-4
"That was an open goal and he missed from two yards."
TMS commentator Henry Blofeld
36th over: Not for the first time today, a run-out opportunity is squandered, with Harmison failing to sidefoot the ball on to the stumps 193-4
35th over: Collingwood follows up his fine fielding with a good over, keeping the Sri Lankans down to just one and, with Tharanga nervously approaching century, perhaps they won't have to chase 300 after all. 190-4
34th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 188-4 Dilshan 14
Harmison returns and takes a wicket, thanks to a quite magnificent catch from his Durham colleague Collingwood at gully, to account for Dilshan. 189-4
33rd over: Collingwood, comfortably the pick of the bowlers, returns and again the batsmen pick up quick singles that could have been prevented. 184-3
32nd over: Tharanga helps a leg-side no-ball from Mahmood down to fine-leg for four to spoil an otherwise decent over. That just about sums up how things have gone for England. 179-3
31st over: Tharanga and Dilshan look keen to get after Dalrymple now and a quick single almost leads to disaster. However, Dalrymple's fielding is not his best asset and he drops the ball when it is returned to him with Tharanga short of his ground. 174-3
30th over: RAF aircraft pass over the middle of the ground to create an incredible din and the crowd respond with a huge ovation. It is part of a celebration to mark the Queen's 80th birthday. Meanwhile, things have quietened down for Mahmood, who concedes just the four. 165-3
29th over: Dalrymple is back but leaks six runs as Sri Look to relaunch their assault. 161-3
28th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 153-3 Sangakkara 15 A much-needed success for England thanks to the alertness of Collingwood, the team's best fielder, who pounces after a mix-up in the running. He quickly gets the ball back to Mahmood and Sangakkara is left stranded. 155-3
27th over: Another boundary comes off a Sangakkara shot square on the off-side - so many have been shipped through that region. Bresnan responds with a fine delivery which beats the vice-captain but the 150 comes up and, after the start they have made, Sri Lanka will want to double that. 152-2
26th over: A no-ball and wide from Mahmood means England have bowled 19 extra deliveries so far - they will struggle to complete their 50 overs in the three-and-a-half hours they are allowed. 145-2
25th over: Bresnan keeps them down to just three this time. The hosts will need more of that and a couple of wickets to get themselves back in this game. 139-2
24th over: Sangakkara opens his account with a rank long-hop from Mahmood which he cuts effortlessly for four. It's been buffet bowling - help yourself - from England today. 136-2
"I'm not sure Strauss has got this right, taking off his two most effective bowlers who had stemmed the flow of runs. He is a young captain though."
TMS analyst Gus Fraser
23rd over: A surprising move sees Bresnan brought back in place of Dalrymple, who had generally bowled quite tightly. Tharanga immediately dispatches a half-volley for four and the young paceman is again under pressure. 131-2
22nd over: WICKET 124-2 Jayawardene 24
The Sri Lanka captain tries to loft Collingwood down the ground but succeeds only in finding his opposite number Strauss at long-off and an excellent partnership of 99 is ended. That might just stop the wheels coming off completely for England. 125-2
21st over: Jayawardene decides aggression is the way to deal with it by hammering Dalrymple high over midwicket for a six - his first boundary off his 34th ball. 123-1
20th over: A tidy over from Collingwood sees him register only the second maiden of the innings. The signs are not good for England - when the pace is taken off the ball it is hard to score and Sri Lanka have three decent exponents of that. 115-1
19th over: More woe for England as Jones misses a stumping off Dalrymple. The groans are even louder when the replay is shown. Another good over from the Middlesex man and he should have been celebrating the wicket of Tharanga. 115-1
18th over: Sri Lanka's confidence is soaring and they are looking to take at least a single off every delivery. Four come off Collingwood's next over. 112-1
"England's bowling has been abysmal. Sri Lanka haven't had to take too many risks, the've just waited for the bad balls."
TMS summariser Gus Fraser
17th over: We'll now have some off-spin from Oxford graduate Dalrymple, who has a reputation for being a deep thinker. He must be a genius, after conceding just two, although the penultimate ball goes for four leg-byes. 108-1
16th over: Collingwood, who bowled well in the Twenty20 game on Thursday, comes on. Can he stop the deluge of runs? Sri Lanka look on course for 350 at the moment - or even more. Tharanga slashes the ball down to third man for a single to bring up the 100, the last 50 of which came off 33 balls. 102-1
"Where does Strauss go now? He's turned to his most senior bowler and it's not worked at all. He'll have to use this drinks break to get his players in a huddle - it's been a poor morning."
TMS analyst and ex-England captain Mike Gatting
15th over: Strauss brings back Harmison in a desperate attempt to take a wicket to peg the tourists back. Tharanga, who is well set now, turns the first ball through square-leg and crashes the next over point to complete his fifty off 44 balls. It's been an entertaining innings but you have to say England have helped him with some pretty mediocre bowling and fielding. Strauss lets the ball slip through his hands and Harmison deliveries two embarrassing wides to illustrate the point. 97-1
14th over: Another wide from Bresnan means a staggering 20 of Sri Lanka's runs have already come from extras. 84-1
13th over: More dross from Mahmood, who dishes out two awful deliveries outside off-stump which Thranga duly cracks away to bring up the fifty partnership off only 44 balls - of which Jayawardene has made only seven. The Sri Lankans are now scoring at more than six an over and this will test Strauss' captaincy skills. 81-1
12th over: Bresnan blots his copybook with a leg-side wide and a long-hop which Tharanga hammers away through the off-side. The runs are leaking too quickly for England's liking as the left-hander tickles the ball down to fine-leg for his sixth four. 69-1
11th over: Strauss brings on Mahmood for Harmison and he carries on where the opening two bowlers had left off by delivering a leg-side wide. Tharanga then lofts the ball over point and drives elegantly through extra-cover for successive boundaries. Only a good piece of fielding from Bell prevents a third - this looks a very good wicket. 58-1
10th over: Bresnan bowls his first over in ODI cricket and hits Tharanga on the pad first ball but it did a bit too much and was missing leg-stump. The Yorkshire seamer completes an encouraging maiden, with only a leg-bye coming off the last ball. 48-1
9th over: Tharanga produces the shot of the morning so far, driving Harmison elegantly through the covers and no-one bothers to move. The next ball is a beauty and shows what the hosts should be doing on a helpful surface. Tharanga thrashes a wide delivery through backward point to move to 15 as 11 come off the over. 47-1
8th over: England have done well to cut down the boundaries but the wides and some pretty shoddy fielding have already gifted Sri Lanka too many runs. Several quick singles are taken in Plunkett's next over which should not have been on. 36-1
Someone of Harmison's class should not be bowling in those areas. There was one delivery which Strauss at second slip could have taken - an absolute shocker."
TMS analyst Gus Fraser
7th over: Dalrymple, who has an unwanted habit of missing with his throws at the stumps is off target again when they scamper through for a leg-bye. If he had hit Tharanga would have been a yard short. There is a confident appeal from Harmison for a catch behind next ball which Nigel Llong turns down but he lets himself down with yet another wide. 31-1
6th over: A third of Sri Lanka's runs have come in wides as Plunkett strays again. 28-1
5th over: WICKET SRI LANKA 25-1 Jayasuriya 11
It's almost an action replay of the previous delivery and this time Jayasuriya makes contact and Jones catches to give England their first breakthrough.
5th over: We're in for a late night at this rate after yet another wide is signalled, but this time Harmison was unfortunate as Jayasuriya is agonisingly close to edging behind.
4th over: Jayasuriya goes for a quick single and Dalrymple misses with the throw, to allow an extra run, and wides number six and seven follow. Jayasuriya then cracks a wide half-volley from Plunkett through extra-cover for four. There was no footwork at all but when you connect like that who cares? 21-0
3rd over: With the England seamers making the ball lift at will, dabbing the ball down for quick singles is a good option at the moment and the Sri Lankan pair do that in between the fifth wide of the innings. There is a delay while Jayasuriya is treated after being hit in a sensitive area. 13-0
2nd over: Another Durham bowler, Plunkett, and another wide to start with. There is plenty of bounce on offer and Plunkett beats Jayasuriya with a good delivery. The ball then bounces off the left-hander's hip and umpire Hair chalks off the two because he withdrew his bat. A good over from Plunkett apart from two wides. 10-0
1st over: Harmison sends down a wide with the first ball and Jayasuriya smashes the second legal delivery over point for four before a leg-side short delivery is also called a wide. Not the best of starts for England. 8-0
1041: Strauss leads the discussion in the huddle, and will be looking for early wickets. He says the pitch has a tinge of green to it but will play easier as the day goes on.
"I don't think anyone knows what our best side is so it's an opportunity for one or two to put their hands up and say they deserve a place to Duncan Fletcher."
TMS analyst Mike Gatting
1030: Glorious sunshine will greet the players when this series gets underway in 15 minutes. Strauss won the toss and opted to field, with England handing a debut to Yorkshire paceman Tim Bresnan, who can also bat a bit. Sri Lanka have key bowlers Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan back.
England: Trescothick, Strauss (capt), Bell, Pietersen, Collingwood, Dalrymple, Jones (wkt), Bresnan, Plunkett, Harmison, Mahmood.
Sri Lanka: Jayasuriya, Tharanga, Jayawardene (capt), Dilshan, Sangakkara (wkt), Arnold, Kapugedera, Fernando, Vaas, Malinga, Muralitharan.
