Vaughan cools England return talk
Michael Vaughan
Vaughan says he will take his time before returning for England
Michael Vaughan insists he will not repeat the mistake of rushing back into international cricket too soon after a successful comeback for Yorkshire.

Vaughan broke down early on the tour to India following knee surgery.

He played his first game since then on Monday in the C&G Trophy and there have been calls for him to return against Sri Lanka in next month's one-dayers.

But he said: "This is the beginning. I need to get through a few games and test it out over two or three weeks."

He added: "In hindsight, we probably didn't test it enough cricket-wise going into the India tour because of the time schedule.

"This comeback was a really specific plan and rehabilitation programme. It's been hard work.

"I'll try to play all the games I can for Yorkshire and see how it reacts to some four-day cricket."

I wouldn't rule out playing against Sri Lanka in the one-day series but I won't make rash statements

Some experts, such as former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott expressed doubts about Vaughan's career because of the slow pace of his recovery.

But Vaughan insists he was upbeat all along but was not keen on making public statements in case they backfired.

"I've been quiet because I was very confident and I didn't want to come out with any rash statements.

"And I won't now because I know the knee is still a bit of a problem and I have a lot of hurdles to overcome before I'm available for England."

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew agrees that erring on the side of caution is the best approach.

"I think he'd be mad to come back and play one-day international cricket with this dodgy knee.

"The Ashes is the main thing as far as Vaughan is concerned...and for him to twist it playing against Sri Lanka in a pretty meaningless one-day international somwhere would be a real shame.

"They've got a Test series against Pakistan, starting in July. Look after him, nurse him along, get him in form, play that and then on to Australia."

Yorkshire chief executive Stuart Regan, meanwhile, was delighted by Vaughan's performance against Scotland.

"He started off a little bit gingerly and was obviously a little bit nervous after being out for so long, but his confidence built over the game.

"He fielded impressively and when he came into bat, he got 67, sprayed a few balls around including one very nice six into the Western Terrace, much to the delight of the fans, and it was great to see Michael back to his best."

Regan said he believed the one-day series against Sri Lanka would be a "a little bit too early" for Vaughan.

"He's been doing some running on the field in straight lines, but when you've got a knee injury it's twisting and turning that causes aggravation and I think he needs to test it in the county game first," he added.
