England squandered a good start to finish day one of the third Test against Pakistan in Lahore on 248-6.

Michael Vaughan (58) and Marcus Trescothick (50) put on 101 to boost hopes of a series-levelling victory.

But they and Ian Bell fell sweeping Shoaib Malik before Kevin Pietersen edged behind off Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who also dismissed Andrew Flintoff.

Danish Kaneria bowled Geraint Jones but Paul Collingwood (71 not out) rode his luck to make his maiden Test 50.

There was no sign of the problems to come when Vaughan and Trescothick saw off the seam and swing movement generated by Naved and Shoaib Akhtar to give England a solid platform.

An authoritative pull shot off Naved brought up the 50 for England and illustrated the ease with which Vaughan had fitted back in at the top of the order in Andrew Strauss' absence for family reasons.

Trescothick, after taking 26 balls to get off the mark, also pounced on anything slow, and the quick outfield carried just about everything timed well to the boundary.

There were a couple of minor scares - Trescothick cut Sami just over point and Vaughan got in a tangle to a short ball from the same bowler and almost gloved behind.

But that came in an over when the right-hander collected three boundaries, two of which were classic drives through the covers and long-on.

Vaughan went on to complete his 14th Test 50 off 70 balls and the foundations were set for a formidable total when England reached lunch on 93.

The skipper resumed confidently, pulling Shoaib for four to bring up the 100 partnership from 182 balls.

But England's persistence with the sweep against off-spinner Malik - under a cloud after his action was reported in the first Test - undid all that good work in the next 30 minutes.

Vaughan found the square-leg fielder, Bell was caught at short fine-leg and Trescothick got an inside edge which came off his boot and was grasped by a lunging Kamran Akmal.

Collingwood got going with three fine cover drives off Malik, although he was lucky when the ball flew past and bounced in front of first slip Hasan Raza off successive deliveries.

Pietersen was soon enjoying himself too and swung away Malik for six over mid-wicket before slog-sweeping Kaneria and driving Naved down the ground.

But just when England looked to have recovered from the post-lunch shocks they had another when Pietersen glanced a leg-side delivery from Naved to the wicket-keeper.

After a subdued start Flintoff pulled and drove Naved down the ground beautifully for boundaries.

It was not long before his eagerness to attack got the better of him, a swing at one that was not really there to pull was untidily gathered by Shoaib at deep backward square-leg.

Collingwood continued to play some handsome shots and continued to enjoy his fair share of luck - an edge past the slips brought up his half-century, and replays showed he should have been given out caught behind off Shoaib.

Jones looked all at sea against leg-spinner Kaneria, who nearly caught and bowled him before an ugly heave ended with ball crashing against timber.

Shaun Udal played a fine late cut for four and it will need more heroics from him and the rest of the tail on day two.
