Fraser backs Jones to keep place
Jones compares notes with fellow paceman Steve Harmison
Former England bowler Angus Fraser has backed Simon Jones to keep his place for the fourth Test in South Africa.

Geoffrey Boycott, the ex-England captain, has continued to criticise Jones but Fraser has been impressed by the Glamorgan paceman.

"I think he's bowled pretty well on this tour so far," Fraser said.

"He got four wickets in the first Test in a spell of bowling that changed the course of that game, and he bowled fairly consistently in Cape Town."

With the series balanced at 1-1 going into Thursday's fourth Test at the Wanderers, England have been boosted by the news that all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is fit to play.

But the conditions in Johannesburg may encourage the tourists' management to make one change, with James Anderson pressurising Jones for his place.

"There's speculation going into the fourth Test that James Anderson should come in for Jones and offer a new alternative in an effort to get (Jacques) Kallis out," Fraser, who took 177 Test wickets for England, added.

"I don't think that, as this bowling attack has worked quite well - it's not quite fired - but Jones offers something different and they should persevere with him.

"He's quite hostile, he's aggressive, he can reverse swing the old ball and when he gets it right he can be quick.

"Some spells are hit and miss, but with the bowling attack that England have got and with a couple of bankers in Flintoff, (Steve) Harmison, (Matthew) Hoggard and (Ashley) Giles, you can throw someone into the equation who sometimes doesn't get it right.

"Jones is at that stage in his career, but will hope to progress and become as consistent as the others.

"At this moment Simon is maybe feeling a bit sorry for himself and feeling like he'd like to be a more integral part of the attack, but he's just going to have to be patient."
