New Zealand Chris Cairns begins the final Test of his career on Thursday and insists that despite their poor showing the team are in decent shape. "I know it sounds funny saying this when we are 2-0 down in a series, but I think New Zealand cricket is in better shape now than when I began," he said.
"We came through some tough times in the early to mid-90s. But we have a very sound structure now."
Cairns will retire after playing 62 Tests just as he turns 34.
The player admitted his team had disappointed on tour.
He said: "We have a lot of disappointed guys - but we have to pick ourselves up and play like we can.
"I never expected to be coming here 2-0 down. I always thought it might be a draw and a win to one side and the series would be open, so 2-0 was not in my focus at all."
"But I suppose for me it is just about going out on the park and giving everything - and I will go out and do that, play as hard as I can even though we are two down."
