Marsh says players cannot be watched 24 hours a day

England Academy director Rod Marsh has taken a dim view of former pupil Graham Wagg's cocaine admission.

Wagg has been banned by the England and Wales Cricket Board for 15 months and had his Warwickshire deal terminated.

Marsh had little sympathy for the former England A all-rounder saying: "Anyone who takes drugs at the Academy gets thrown out.

"If people choose to do that, we don't want them at the Academy and likewise the counties don't want them either."

Wagg was part of the Academy's intake last season and Marsh said players were educated about the potential perils of drug taking.

"There is nothing more you can do. Do you stay with them 24 hours a day?" he said.

"Education and rehabilitation is there but sometimes people mess up."

Ian Bell, Wagg's former Warwickshire team-mate, said he hoped Wagg would be able to resurrect his career when his ban ends on 31 December 2005.

Bell told BBC Sport: "Drugs education is a massive issue and a big thing at both the Academy and Warwickshire. They are keen on it and very strict on it.

"It's a trap for us all I guess. But in the end you are not in sport for long and you want to live each day in it as if it was your last.

"My heart goes out to Graham. He is a nice guy and a talented cricketer.

"I hope there's something along the line for him in the future."
