He said: "It's a great feeling. I want the team to get to 700-750 and hopefully I can eclipse the record."

Reflecting on his 375 on the same ground in 1994, he added: "I will have a good rest tonight and try and remember what I did 10 years ago."

As far as Lara is concerned, his innings so far is already better in quality than the 375.

He said: "When I set the record here 10 years ago, that was different because the English bowling is more disciplined now. If I was facing the same attack I would have reached 375 by now.

"We haven't been batting well but this pitch is different. It's a paradise for batters and tough for the bowlers."

Lara also revealed that Hayden's 380 had been "the catalyst" for him to get his game together again. "The record will be there in the back of my mind tomorrow," he admitted.
