Vaughan and Pearson both starred against Australia this winter |
One-day captain Michael Vaughan and fast bowler Lucy Pearson have been named Vodaphone Cricketers of the Year for 2002/03. The duo were presented with their awards at a dinner in London on Tuesday evening, attended by the England Test team, who take on Zimbabwe in the first Test on Thursday.
Vaughan, who has scored seven centuries in the last 12 months, moving to the top of the world Test batting ratings in the process, received a silver salver and a cheque for 15,000.
He was named last month as one of Wisden's five cricketers of the year and succeeded Nasser Hussain as skipper of the one-day team a fortnight ago.
"Receiving this award really finished off what has been an amazing 12 months for me," said the Yorkshire opener.
"I look back on what I have achieved, especially scoring the three hundreds in Australia, and almost have to pinch myself."
Pearson clinched the Women's Cricketer of the Year award, and a cheque for 10,000, after spearheading England's attack in Australia.
The tourists won one Ashes Test and drew the second as Pearson equalled a world record set 49 years ago by taking 11 wickets.
"I am chuffed to bits to be given this award," she said.
"After a very good start to last summer, I was sidelined with a stress fracture and I wondered if I would even make it on tour during the winter.
"I will never forget the tour of Australia both from a personal achievement point of view but also as I feel the England women's team is making significant progress on the pitch."
