Veteran Grant Flower showed his class with an unbeaten 112 as Zimbabwe took charge on a marathon second day against British Universities.
Looking to make up time lost on a rain-hit day one, the tourists batted well into the evening to reach 302-7 - a first innings lead of 156.
Flower and captain Heath Streak shared an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 119 after a spate of wickets after tea, left-armer Robert Ferley taking 3-73
Streak reached stumps at 38 not out.
Mark Vermeulen and Stuart Carlisle both hit half-centuries in a second-wicket stand of 95 after opener Dion Ebrahim was lbw to his eighth delivery.
Earlier, four wickets for Doug Hondo brought the 23-year-old paceman figures of 5-26 as the students were bowled out for 146.
