Gough is applauded off after the draw with Somerset

Yorkshire captain Darren Gough has made his last first-class appearance after deciding to sit out the final match of the season against Sussex.

The fast bowler, who had said he was retiring at the end of the season, is not in the squad for the game at Hove.

Gough, 38, played his last home game appearance against Somerset last week and was applauded off by the crowd.

"I wanted to go out in style - and that proved to me I am ready to retire, I am absolutely shattered now," he said.

The former England star took two wickets during his fiery first spell on the final day of the game at Somerset.

"I bowled as quick as I have for a long, long time in that first spell," he said after the match.

"I had the opposition saying that is the quickest they have faced all season and when they say stuff like that, I'd like to finish on that note.

"When I look back I'm glad my last wicket was Justin Langer.

"I've had some great battles against him and it's nice to know my last wicket in Yorkshire was someone as good as him."

Gough took 855 first-class wickets in a career spanning two spells at his native Yorkshire and one stint with Essex.

But county cricket may not have seen the last of him as he is contemplating the possibility of playing in next summer's Twenty20 Cup.

Gough's international career saw him play 58 Tests and 159 one-day internationals.
