Money dictates Worcs bowler chase

Worcestershire are planning to talk to paceman Simon Jones and Yorkshire bowler Matthew Hoggard but say they cannot afford to have both players.

The club's chief executive Mark Newton say the decision on who they look to sign will be down to money.

"We haven't got an infinite amount of money and we can't afford to have both Simon and Matthew," said Newton.

The New Road side have put in a 28-day notice to talk to Hoggard and his Headingley colleague Ajmal Shahzad.

Newton says if they can agree a deal with England international Hoggard they will not be able to keep Jones on the books.

"It is going to be a case of one or the other, maybe neither," he added.

Worcestershire have already revealed they will not be replacing overseas star Ashley Noffke when he returns to Australia in August, as they cannot afford another player.

England seamer Jones, who is out of contract in September, has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury that has prevented him from playing since last August.

While Jones is confident he will be fit for the 2010 campaign, Worcestershire are yet to decide whether to make him a new offer, and may go for a " pay as you play " contract.
