Steven Davies is keen to put the Ireland defeat behind him

Worcestershire keeper Steven Davies says the squad is now doubly-determined to make their mark in the Twenty20 Cup this season.

He told BBC Hereford and Worcester the shock Friends Provident Trophy defeat by Ireland had been an embarrassment.

"Obviously it was a setback and all the boys are gutted as we can't really explain it," Davies said.

"We've spoken about it and we've put it to rest so now we're looking to move on from that game."

Worcestershire were humbled by the Irish in their final group game in the 50-over form of the game when, needing only 153 to win, they were bowled out for 58.

It's a big game for us on Monday and hopefully we will win it and get off to a good start

This was their lowest-ever score in one-day cricket and led to director of cricket Steve Rhodes apologising to the members and supporters for the team's feeble batting display.

Davies says the players know full well they grossly underperformed and they are now determined to give the fans plenty of positives to shout about in the Twenty20 game.

"It's an important competition for us and we've not really played that well in it in previous years," he said.

"There's a lot of money to be made in this competition whereas when it first came out it was seen as a little bit of a joke competition.

"With the IPL there is an opportunity for the players and the club to make some good money from it," he added.

"It's a big game for us on Monday and hopefully we will win it and get off to a good start."

Worcestershire captain Vikram Solanki believes Davies could be key to his side's chances in the Twenty20 cup.

"He has obviously returned recently from playing his first Twenty20 international," Solanki told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

"He's in some good form with the bat in the one-day format and hopefully he can continue into the Twenty20."

BBC Hereford and Worcester will have full commentary on the match against Gloucestershire Gladiators on 738 AM and online.
