Newton backs players skin tests

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton has welcomed a move by the Professional Cricketers' Association to have skin cancer screening for players.

All PCA members are to be screened for the first time - and Newton agrees that it is vital that players get themselves checked on a regular basis.

"It's something as we all grew up that we never heard of," said Newton.

"But, for modern cricketers, so many hours in the sun, it needs checking every year," Newton told BBC Sport.

Former Worcestershire player David Wigley, now with Northamptonshire, admits that his fellow professionals have become increasingly aware of the need for the tests.

"A lot of the guys spend time in Australia and New Zealand," he said. "Diseases are rife out there.

"These lads are getting a lot of sun very early in their lives and protection is a habit they get used to."
