Ben Smith has already been involved with coaching the club's youngsters |
Worcestershire batsman Ben Smith has followed Matt Mason by signing a new player/coach deal at New Road. The ex-skipper, who joined the county in 2002, has signed a contract to remain as a player for two more years and become a specialist fielding coach. Smith, 36, who has a level four coaching badge, has already been helping with the club's academy. Mason signed a new deal last week that will see him carry on playing, while also coaching the club's young bowlers. Smith said: "This is an important opportunity as it allows me to continue playing for Worcestershire which is of paramount importance to me but also enables me to start developing a future career in cricket. "Since joining the county in 2002, I have seen the team develop a blend of youth and experience which augurs well for the next few years and I really look forward to being an integral part of what we all believe will be great success on the field." Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: "We are delighted that Ben has agreed to extend his playing contract for a further two years. "He is the ultimate professional in terms of attitude, work ethic and performance. "These qualities rub off on other players which means he plays a key role on and off the field. "Whilst his cricket will remain a priority, we want our younger players to benefit from his skills hence the offer of the full time post as a specialist fielding coach."
