Matt Mason is in his sixth season at New Road

Worcestershire have given veteran paceman Matt Mason a dual contract with the club that will see him combine playing with coaching.

Mason, 34, who has recovered from shoulder surgery to force his way back in at New Road, has already spent time mentoring the club's youngsters.

But he told BBC Hereford and Worcester he still has much to offer as a player.

"Coaching is something I'm passionate about," said Mason. "But I feel I can also still contribute on the field."

Since returning to the team a month ago, Mason has taken 10 Championship wickets in five games to help Worcestershire go clear at the top of the Division Two table.

"As a player I believe I still have a lot to offer," he said. "And, since returning to the first team, I feel I've proved that.

"At Worcester I believe we have one of the strongest and most talented squads of fast bowlers in the country. And the opportunity to work with the senior players, and continue the development of the younger bowlers, is one I am relishing."

Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes says the now 'anglicised' Mason has become an integral part of the squad since arriving from Western Australia in 2002.

"On the field he has had a tough 18 months." said Rhodes. "But he is now playing regularly with the 1st XI.

"He has certainly earned himself a new playing contract for 2009 but we want to look ahead, so he will take on a dual role from October as a bowling coach.

"Over the last two seasons he has been mentoring our younger players on an informal basis and it is clear he has natural ability in this area. We need to strengthen our coaching team so we want to develop this role in the years ahead."
