South Africa international fast bowler Wayne Parnell will be joining Sussex as the county's overseas player for the second half of the 2011 season.

Parnell, 21, will replace Rana Naved at the end of June, subject to receiving clearance from Cricket South Africa.

Sussex professional cricket manager Mark Robinson said: "Wayne will give us not only a wicket-taking threat, but the potential for valuable runs."

The left-arm seamer has played three Tests and 18 one-day internationals.

Parnell made his first-class debut for Eastern Province in 2006, aged 17, and became the youngest player to be handed a national contract by Cricket South Africa in early 2009. His Test debut came 12 months later against England in Johannesburg.

In 2009, he was signed by Kent as their overseas player for a six-week period to replace the Australian Stuart Clark.

A useful lower order batsman, he averages over 20 in first-class cricket and one-day internationals.

Parnell said: "I'm very excited about the prospect of playing for Sussex.

"I believe it will be a great learning curve and I will definitely gain more experience playing alongside some seasoned professionals as well as international cricketers.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge of winning trophies for Sussex."
