Sussex have won five trophies with Adams as captain

Chris Adams has announced he is to quit as Sussex captain after 11 years in charge at Hove.

The 38-year-old made the announcement after guiding Sussex to the Pro40 Division One title thanks to a thrilling win over Nottinghamshire.

"It's a great time to bow out with that under my belt," said Adams.

Mike Yardy is to take over from Adams, who has led Sussex to five trophies in those 11 years and will continue to play for them as a batsman next season.

As well as the Pro40 Division One title, Adams has guided Sussex to three County Championship titles and the C&G Trophy during his time in charge.

He almost left the club in 2006 after agreeing a deal to become Yorkshire's director of pro cricket, but changed his mind less than a fortnight later and returned to the south coast.

"It's been a fantastic journey and it was really important for me that we won this particular trophy for the development of the club," said Adams, who has one year left of his Sussex contract.

"I felt the wind of change was blowing about six or seven weeks ago and I know it's the right time to step down.

"There are a lot of good young players coming through the system now. Mike Yardy is his own man who will bring a lot to the side and to the development of the cricket club."

The 27-year-old Yardy added: "It's a fantastic honour and although it's sad to lose such a great captain, I'm excited by the opportunity.

"The make-up of the team is changing with some young lads coming through. I'm looking forward to the challenge and if the lads play as well for me as they have for Chris, my job will be easy."
