Gould swaps Somerset for Surrey

Somerset chief executive Richard Gould is set to leave his post at the county to take up the same role at Surrey.

Gould, who was formerly at Bristol City, joined Somerset in 2005 and will move on before the new season.

"We have enjoyed some excellent times over the last six years and Somerset is a very special club," Gould said.

"I am excited at the challenge offered by Surrey and it is the only county that could have tempted me away from Somerset at this time."

Gould, a former army officer who studied at Harvard Business School, replaces Paul Sheldon who is standing down after 15 seasons at The Oval.

Surrey chairman Richard Thompson said: "Richard is a born leader. His term and contribution at Somerset speaks for itself. His commitment to cricket at all levels and strong commercial pedigree highlighted Richard as a stand out candidate.

"I feel confident his contribution will be significant in all aspects of Surrey Cricket in the years to come.

Somerset chairman Andy Nash on Gould

Somerset chairman Andy Nash said: "I am absolutely delighted that he has secured such an excellent opportunity and it reflects very well on Somerset that we are developing not only our players for England; but also our senior managers to go on to prestigious roles and greater challenges.

"At the same time, I am very sorry to see Richard move on as he has been a truly great companion, colleague and combatant to work alongside.

"Richard joined when the club's fortunes were at a low ebb. Since then he has played a leading role in driving forwards the redevelopment of the County Ground and the dramatic improvement in our financial position and prospects.

"In turn, these achievements have allowed us to substantially increase our investment in cricket with results that have been very evident in our rise to prominence in all competitions, as well as developing many players for international duty."

Gould takes up his new position at the start of April and Somerset hope to announce a replacement at Taunton in the coming weeks.
