Ireland can reach quarter-finals, says Surrey's Wilson

Surrey wicketkeeper Gary Wilson says Ireland are targeting a place in the quarter-finals at the ICC World Cup.

The 24-year-old was named in Ireland's squad on Wednesday and is hopeful his side can cause another upset.

Wilson told BBC London 94.9: "We've got a hard group. We probably need three wins out of six to get to the quarter-finals. That's our main aim.

"In the 2007 World Cup we got to the Super Eights and we got to the Super Eights in the 2009 World Twenty20."

Ireland face stiff competition in England, India, South Africa and the West Indies in Group B but Wilson, who has one century and four fifties from 25 one-day internationals, says their first two targets in the group are clear.

England have never really beaten us badly, it's always been quite close

"We've got a good record against Bangladesh and the Netherlands," he said. "And England have never really beaten us badly, it's always been quite close.

"We play England at Bangalore which is meant to be a good wicket, hopefully it will just be a good game of cricket and the best team will win on the day. We'll be going into the game full of confidence although we fully respect that England are a full force in international cricket now.

"But for the weather, we could have put England out [in 2010's World Twenty20 tournament], obviously we'll never know, but for the last three tournaments we've given a good account of ourselves and we'll be definitely looking to do that this time as well by qualifying for the quarter-final stages.

"It's by no means impossible for us to qualify for the next round and that's what we're looking to do."
