Surrey bowler Chris Tremlett surprised by Ashes call
Tremlett has taken 48 wickets in the County Championship this season
Fast bowler Chris Tremlett says he was surprised to be named in the England squad for the Ashes in Australia.
The 29-year-old, who has played three Test matches, moved from Hampshire to Surrey at the end of last season.
"My aim was to bowl as much as I could for Surrey. England wasn't really on my radar," Tremlett told BBC London.
"The last few weeks people started talking about me being on the England radar a little bit more, but I've tried not to think about it."
Tremlett, who played all of his three Tests against India in 2007, was hampered by injuries at the end of his spell with Hampshire, the county he made his first-class debut for in 2000.
"I had getting back in the England set up at some point at the back of my mind, but I mostly wanted to get overs under my belt at Surrey and stay injury free," added Tremlett.
"I guess I've almost surprised myself a little bit by staying on the park as much as I have."
The 6ft 7in paceman has also played nine one-day internationals, three of which were in Australia on England's last tour down under.
"Generally the wickets (in Australia) are more suited to the taller guys and I have got rewards over there playing in club cricket," said Tremlett.
"I didn't bowl too badly in the one-dayers I played. I know what to expect and I think the wickets will suit me, so I'm looking forward to it."
"I think my confidence is as high as it's ever been. I feel I'm a much better bowler than I was years ago, even when I played for England."
