Smith has taken 19 wickets in the Second XI Championship this season

Surrey have signed left-arm spin bowler Tom Smith from Sussex on a one-month loan deal.

If the 21-year-old impresses his stay at The Oval could be extended until the end of the season.

Smith made his Sussex one-day debut in 2006, signed professional terms in 2007 and made his first Championship start against Lancashire in April this year.

Sussex manager Mark Robinson said: "This is a great opportunity for Tom to get some first-team cricket."

He added: "It will help his development as a quality spin bowler."
